American Institutions - History 1700 American Civilization

I took American Civilization as a course because it is very intriguing to me the history of our country. In this assignment we were asked to choose a picture from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) “Pictures of the Civil War” collection. After choosing a picture you are to assess the photograph as a historical resource. I choose the picture of "Black Laborers on a wharf, James River, VA" based off how it effected me looking at the picture. I really enjoyed this assignment because it made me reflect on what was in the picture not just the story behind it.

Reflection:

This assignment really struck a nerve in me when I really started looking at the picture. Reading about the Civil War and African Americans struggle is wonderful, yet nothing tells a story like a picture. Being able to see the emotion actually on someone's face and see the stories in their eyes was more telling than any book or story I have read. I truly am touched by the perserverence of the African Americans during that era to fight for freedom and rights.
